Major Rail Projects in 2020
Safearth’s contribution to safety and reliability in the rail industry has continued in 2020, with a number of significant projects.
Two of the largest rail projects in the region at present include Sydney’s Metro project and Brisbane’s Cross River Rail project.
Sydney Metro City and South West
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project.
From the north west, metro rail is being extended under Sydney Harbour, through new underground city stations and beyond to the south west.
Using five tunnel boring machines, tunnelling finished in early 2020 on new 15.5-kilometre twin railway tunnels between the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood and Sydenham.
New stations will be delivered at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo along with new underground platforms at Central Station.
Safearth’s scope:
- Safearth is specialist earthing and bonding designer for Line Wide Works
- Three 33kV bulk supply feeders and substation designs from including LFI studies to third party assets along feeder route
- Dedicated 33kV and 11kV reticulation design between Chatswood and Bankstown
- HV earthing design for 7 new underground stations including UG traction substations
- Above ground traction substation earthing and lightning protection designs
- Rail bonding design
- Design of train maintenance facility earthing and bonding including shore power and train lifters and interface in main line
- Tunnel earthing and bonding design including combined services route, tunnel services and cross passages,
- Padmount substation design for at grade station services
- System wide electrolysis design and coordination with NSW electrolysis committee
- System wide earthing and bonding strategy
- System wide EMC design and coordination
- Project wide testing and commissioning of system earthing and bonding
Brisbane Cross River Rail
Cross River Rail is a new 10.2 kilometre rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes 5.9 kilometres of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and CBD.
In total, the project will deliver;
- Four new underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street and Roma Street
- 2 upgraded stations at Dutton Park and Exhibition.
- 6 upgraded Stations from Salisbury to Fairfield on Brisbane’s Southside
- Development of 3 new Gold Coast Stations
Safearth’s scope:
- Safearth is earthing, bonding and EMC designer for Tunnel and Station development
- Earthing design for 4 underground stations and station HV substations
- Station LPS designs
- Earthing design for AC railway including portals, tunnel, tunnel services, stations and interface with at grade systems.
- Design for trackside equipment rooms and existing rail line flyovers
- EMC design and coordination for tunnel and electrical and mechanical systems at 4 underground stations.
