High Voltage, Earthing & Arc Flash Conference 2025 – Auckland, NZ
This week Gordon McMurray, Principal Engineer at Safearth presented a keynote address at the High Voltage, Earthing & Arc Flash Conference run by IDC Technologies in Auckland, New Zealand on “How to Produce Quality Distribution Earthing Designs.”
Gordon explored how best practice in earthing design is shifting, driven by updates to AS/NZS Standards and a move towards quantified risk assessment (QRA). His presentation outlined a practical, optimised approach to designing reliable and cost-effective earthing systems, with a compelling case study to bring the methodology to life. He also introduced the concept of “Global Earthing Areas”, standardised arrangements that allow designers to prioritise efforts where site-specific solutions are truly needed.
Gordon commented “It was great to meet colleagues in New Zealand. Conferences like this help build understanding and ongoing conversations about how to improve our engineering solutions to meet the needs of the people we serve.”
Senior Engineer Joshua Bowman also presented his topic “Earthing System Integrity Testing: How to Detect Failures Before They Happen”.
